The bag holds 2 - 4 flakes of hay depending on bale size and the mesh helps prevent mold and allows dirt to fall through. I love them because I can put a combination of grass hay and alfalfa in it the evening prior to a ride and my horse can eat all night. The next morning I know that his tank is topped off when we start our ride.
